My
overriding
principles
are:
- I will put the country's interests before my party or myself.
- Where possible, I prefer simple frameworks that enable something
to happen and set goals rather than massive bodies of
regulations.
- I will not support any legislation that foists unfunded mandates
on state, city and town governments. No matter how wonderful or
compelling the legislation may be, our state and local governments are
nearly bankrupt, now. They can't handle anything else.
My top priorities are:
Reducing
Oil
Consumption
(aka fixing the economy and fixing global warming)
We need to fix our economy. The various Economic Recovery Federal
spending programs are a necessary part of the solutions, but they are
bandaids. The amount of oil we are importing is taking a heavy
toll and our economy cannot really recover unless we fix the oil
problem. From 2000 to 2010, gas prices
increased from around 1.30 per gallon to around $3 per gallon. If
that rate of increase continues, gas will cost over $7.50 to $9 per
gallon in 2020 and that is a convervative average. There is a
fundamental force causing the increases
that will not go away. This will wreak havoc on the economy if we
don't get very
serious about alternatives. more info...
Bottom Line Regulation
We need effective
regulation of the financial industries and other
coorporate excesses. I favor the concept of Bottom Line
Regulation. I think we should
borrow an from the business world and establish a new incentive tax
bracket for executives that varies based on how well the country meets
various economic goals. more info...
No
deceptive "Free Trade"
Agreements
I believe there is no such thing as "Free Trade" unless all the traders
are free. The so called "Free Trade"
agreements (that Congress seems to delight in) are nothing
more than end runs that allow multi-national corporations to
avoid unions, worker safety laws and public health laws. more info...
Health Care
I believe the current healt care bill comes up short on several of it's
original goals and will need further repair (assuming it passes -- it
hasn't as I write this). more info...
Junk Mail
I think most of us are
really sick of getting so much junk mail. Not only that, but
trash disposal costs are increasing dramatically. I favor
legislation that requires the Post Office to collect a disposal
surcharge on all 3rd class mail. more
